Pear: Autumn poetry and life wisdom hidden in crisp sweetness

As the autumn wind rises and the pear fruit becomes fragrant, pears, as one of the most representative fruits of autumn and winter, have crossed thousands of years with their sweet and juicy taste and nourishing properties, becoming an indispensable part of Chinese food culture and life wisdom. The pear, scientifically known as Pyrus, belongs to the Rosaceae family and the Pyrus genus. It is widely distributed globally, and China is one of the main origins of pears, with a cultivation history of over 3,000 years. The record in the "Book of Songs" stating "There are Ziju and Gou trees, there are pears and chestnuts" has long integrated the pear into ancient agricultural civilization. The scenery described by the Tang Dynasty poet Cen Shen, "Autumn arrives, closing the passes, frost falls, thin clothes are worn. Pear leaves turn red on a thousand trees, cicada songs fill the setting sun," further makes the pear a classic symbol of autumn imagery. After thousands of years of selection and breeding, there are now over a thousand pear varieties worldwide, with more than 300 species in China. The appearance of the pear possesses natural beauty. Most varieties are round or gourd-shaped, with rich peel colors: the golden Su Pear, the jade-green Snow Pear, and the rosy-red Red Pear. The skin is either smooth and delicate, or has faint spots and textures, like an artwork painted by nature itself. Peel it open, and the crystal-clear flesh is revealed. Take a bite, and the juice instantly bursts on the tip of your tongue, with a sweet flavor spreading out – crisp pears are crunchy and juicy, with a fresh fruity aroma when chewed; soft pears are tender and delicate, melting in your mouth, sweet but not greasy. Whether eaten raw or processed into desserts, they bring ultimate gustatory enjoyment.
Besides being delicious, pears are also a "nourishing delicacy" bestowed by nature. In traditional Chinese medicine theory, pears are cool in nature, sweet and slightly sour in taste, and belong to the lung and stomach meridians. They have the effects of promoting fluid production, moistening dryness, clearing heat, resolving phlegm, and moistening the lungs to relieve cough. They are hailed as the "Ancestor of Fruits." "Compendium of Materia Medica" records that pears "raw ones clear the heat of the six internal organs, cooked ones nourish the yin of the five internal organs," pointing out the different effects of eating pears raw versus cooked: eating raw can clear heat and reduce fire, relieving sore throat and dry mouth; eating them steamed reduces their coolness and better nourishes and moistens dryness, making them suitable for people with weaker spleen and stomach. Modern nutrition also confirms that pears are rich in vitamin C, B vitamins, dietary fiber, potassium, calcium, and other minerals, as well as organic acids such as malic acid and citric acid. They can supplement the body's nutritional needs, promote intestinal peristalsis, aid digestion, and the polyphenols they contain also have certain antioxidant effects, making them a natural ingredient that balances deliciousness and health.
The ways of eating pears reveal the ingenious thinking of Chinese people in their daily lives. Eating them raw is the most direct way to enjoy their deliciousness. Washing them and eating them with the skin on retains more dietary fiber. Peeling and cutting them into pieces and pairing them with yogurt or honey creates a richer texture. Processing them further showcases craftsmanship: Rock sugar stewed snow pear is a classic autumn and winter dessert for moisturizing and soothing dryness. Core the snow pear, add rock sugar and Fritillaria, and simmer slowly. The soup is clear and sweet, and the flesh is soft and glutinous, making it an excellent remedy for autumn dryness and cough. Pear paste, dried pears, and canned pears are convenient ways to preserve them. Pear paste can be mixed with water for a warm and nourishing drink. Dried pears can be steeped in water, releasing a rich fruity aroma, suitable for daily health maintenance. Canned pears retain the pear's sweetness and become a snack suitable for all ages. Additionally, pears can be used in cooking. Shredded pear mixed with yam is sweet and refreshing, and pear stewed with pork ribs can cut through greasiness with its fruity aroma, adding flavor to home-style dishes.
In life, pears also carry warm humanistic meanings. "Pear" (梨, lí) is a homophone for "leave" (离, lí), but it has derived beautiful blessings. Ancient people gifted pears as a symbol of "separation but not separation, eternal friendship," expressing their longing and thoughts for relatives and friends. In folk culture, pears are often considered auspicious objects. Placing pears during the Mid-Autumn Festival symbolizes "perfection and reunion." Gifting pears during the Spring Festival signifies "long-lasting good fortune and sweetness." Nowadays, pears have entered daily life, becoming thoughtful gifts for visiting friends and family, and essential fruits on the dining table, embodying people's pursuit of a healthy life and kindness towards others.
